THIS EDITION
......7/29/2008

I’ve added shots from Milwaukee’s 2006 paint horse show to the Horsy Set section. You can see them by clicking on the “New this Edition” icon above.
There’s also some new stuff in the Recently section and the About Pictures section (see below).

This is a gathering place for recent pictures of things that interest me or, simply, catch my eye.
Pommerntag, a celebration for people of Pomeranian descent, held every June in Mequon, Wisconsin, features German food, music, and traditional dancers. Many Pommern people (from an area on the Baltic Sea known as Pomerania or Pommern) made their home in Thiensville, Wisconsin (near Mequon).
For me, their celebration is an occasion to enjoy good food and music and to take a few colorful pictures. This was my third visit. You can see my pictures by clicking on the “Recently” icon above

Last edition I started a section about my thoughts on taking photographs. I talked about pictures without people in them; called it The Hand of Man. It was a poor effort.
This time I talk about photographs of people in informal groups. It’s a type of photo which is difficult for me to successively achieve. I chose the subject motivated by a photograph by Ruth Orkin – one of the most famous pictures ever taken. See it and my group pictures by clicking on the “About Pictures” icon above.

How this started:

Joe Meier, January 2000

In 1935 at the age of fourteen I decided not to be an airplane pilot, but to be a cinematographer. My mom, widowed for five years, had met Ben Brodsky, manager of the Liberty Theatre in Irvington, New Jersey. This fine gentleman and nice man let me watch movies from the wondrous domain of the projection booth. There the projectionist not only tolerated my questions, but patiently explained the workings of the twin projection machines.

Occasionally the film broke, the screen went white, and the projectionist would spring into action. On one such occasion he cut several inches from the film before resplicing it and handed the strip to me. My love of 35mm film started at that moment. Later, under the influence of Life Magazine, my interest shifted toward still photography.

I never became a photographer. As a "practical" young man I did the practical thing and eventually became an aerospace engineer. But I kept taking pictures. After my wife Joan died, my cameras and darkroom helped me to go on without her.
